The Friends of the Library’s Ideas Series this month has been very popular – with a waiting list of 50 people who were not in the group of 30 that we squeezed in between the internet access PCs and our Young Adult area on Thursday evenings. We are really looking forward to the new building where we have a projector screen that automatically descends from the ceiling and space to spare for events like this.

Julie Martin has shared with us richly detailed and fascinating stories all about eBay. The friend who sold ticket stubs to a 1966 Beatles Concert in Adelaide for $280, the boy who advertised his “max wicked sick BMX” one that “did boom gnarly stunt tricks & girl got pregnant just watching” , the husband who bought a gift for his wife – only to discover that she was actually the seller….

Last week, Julie did a session called “Fun Family Fotos” where she showed people how to find out who was in family pictures and how to preserve and store the pictures.

I took notes on my laptop during Julie’s session last night , Selling on eBay Part One. I fed my notes into a CoverItLive window that I have added below. I learned so much about how to describe an item, how to photograph it right and how to set the price so the item sells well. Just click on the window to see my notes.

We have a name for the new building!

Brian Kavanagh, chair of the Project Steering Committee for the Cottesloe, Peppermint Grove, Mosman Park library committee, announced that THE GROVE had been chosen as the preferred name for the project by the Library Naming Working Group, with the byline, ‘Leading Learning’ and Living’.

“The shortlisted names were analysed against the naming criteria graded out of 10 with The Grove, Leaf Library and Library on the Green identified as most strongly meeting the criteria,” he said.

“The Grove symbolises the green and leafy nature of the building, the surrounding landscaping and the natural environment.

“It already has an historical and geographical connection to the location which is on the corner of Stirling Highway and Leake Street in Cottesloe, and reflects sustainable attributes such as tranquillity, satisfaction with what we have, and a sense of place.

According to Ricky Burges, Chief Executive Officer of the Western Australian Local Government Association the development demonstrates tremendous leadership from the three councils and will be a showpiece for the local government sector’s commitment to environmentally sustainable development.

Read more about the decision on our New Library page.
